Simplifying Test Estimation

Summary

In this session, Geoff Horne will demonstrate an Excel-based tool for estimating software testing projects. By using science & mathematics, the tool provides a more accurate estimate than the usual gut-feel processes. The tool allows for the inclusion of a number of variables, e.g. defect severities, working hours, team experience, regression cycles, rework & can even provide a rough idea of how big a test team might need to be. It also endeavors to calculate an estimated completion date for fixing the defects and for completing the execution of the required priority of test cases.

Key Takeaways

  • A better understanding of the variables that affect test efforts

  • How seemingly small unexpected events can greatly affect desired outcomes

  • How using an estimation tool like this can better support the justification of resources for testing.
